20 years passed since Hanshin Great Earthquake

Today January 17 is the day that Hanshin Great Earthquake happened in 1995. I was a student of the University of Tokyo at that time and lived in Tokyo. As it happened very early in the morning (5:46 am), I did not find the earthquake happened. However, when I went to school, there was a crowd in front of TV and saw numerous huge fire emerged from the city houses in Kobe. I was shocked by the scene. Some of my class mate were from Kobe city and they were all anxious because they could not reach their families on the phone. Afterward, the number of the victims piled up to 6,434 and those wounded were 47,392.

It is inevitable for Japanese to accept earthquake happens. Therefore, we need to be ready for it and improve predict system and evacuate or rescue system more and more. In 1923, Great Kanto Earthquake occurred in Tokyo and 100,000 and more people were died by the catastrophe. It is said that a big earthquake happens every 70 to 80 years, it is no wonder that Tokyo would be hit by the next big earthquake.
