Can Japan be a tourism giant?

Japan is making much of inbound tourism from abroad. Japan Tourism Agency has been established since 2008. Although the great east Japan earthquake gave a heavy negative impact on Japan’s tourism, the number of tourists from abroad are regaining fortunately.

According to a research, Kyoto is one of the most favorite tourism spots in Japan. However, there are some places which are getting very popular for foreigners. For example, “Niseko” a ski resort located in Hokkaido is very popular among foreign tourists especially from Australia. It has a rich “powder snow” that attracts them. The number of foreign visitors will definitely reach 400,000, a record high. It is good. The foreign visitors are double of Japanese visitors there. It is a very successful case among Japanese many resort area.

As there is Haneda international airport in my constituency, I am very supportive on inviting foreign tourists. However, there is also a research that many foreigners think it inconvenient that English is not so much available in Japan. Therefore, if Japan continues to aim for a tourism giant, English education is an essentially important issue.
