Yonaguni island is the far west island of
Japan locating about 110km from Taiwan. It also locates about 150km from the Japanese
Senkaku island where China is alleging that the island belongs to their
country.
There, a referendum was made whether the
self defense force of Japan should be equipped or not. The referendum has no
legal binding power. However, people who are junior high-school students or
above and foreigners who have the right of permanent residence could vote.
The result was favors occupied 60% of the
votes. The government respects the result and the SDF will be equipped within
the fiscal year of 2015.
